First Baptist Church Stockdale: A Rich History & Bright Future
In the heart of the small town of Stockdale, TX sits a Baptist Church that has seen the Lord’s faithfulness for the last 150 years.
In 1874 a group of believers assembled to form this Stockdale Baptist church in a picket building. The congregation would later build its very own building in 1885, and in 1953, the building where the church still gathers for worship today was completed and dedicated to the Lord. But this church’s dedication to the Lord goes far beyond a building. Rather, First Baptist Church is marked by the dedication of its people.
As a result, after 150 years, First Baptist Church is not only surviving. It is thriving! And it is experiencing, what some might call, a modern-day revival. In fact, an unofficial saying has been adopted by its members. “A Sunday without a baptism is uncommon.”
Who gets credit for this movement? The pastor? No. The members? No. Certainly the Lord is using the obedience and faithfulness of His people. However, the one who gets credit for this movement is the Lord Himself.
Over the last 3 years, the Lord has been doing a new thing with the same faithful people. On Sunday nights a handful of members gather to pray in that building that was built in 1953. This prayer time is not what many might consider to be typical for a Baptist church. While First Baptist Church prays hard and often for members and others who are sick or in the hospital, that is not what the Sunday night prayer service is centered around. Rather, Sunday nights are focused on asking the Lord to move, asking the Lord to send revival, and asking the Lord to bring friends, family members, co-workers, and more to salvation.
And the Lord has been faithful to hear these prayers and to respond to these prayers. As a result, over the last 3 years First Baptist Church has seen numerous salvations, 85 baptisms, and exponential growth in attendance and membership. In addition, the youth and children’s ministries are packed out on Wednesday nights creating a need for a new youth and children’s building which is currently in the building process.
First Baptist Church has such a rich history! This church would not be where it is today without the dedication of its members over the years to teach God’s Word and to train up future generations.
However, this church also has a rich present. God is still moving in and through His people in Stockdale, today. God’s Word is still being taught to future generations through children’s choir, growth groups (Sunday School), children’s church, and its youth group. Future leaders are being trained up for ministry through the youth and worship programs. And God’s people gather excitedly, each week to study and grow in God’s Word together.
God is not finished with First Baptist Church. Just as this church has seen God’s faithfulness for the last 150 years, there is a confidence moving forward that the Lord is going to take care of this great church long into the future.
While the town of Stockdale, TX may be small, God has and continues to do mighty things in and through First Baptist Church.
If you live in the Stockdale area, you are invited be a part of what the Lord is doing. Be a part of, not just the history of this church, but join in its future.
I have attended Stockdale First Baptist for about 3 years online every Sunday and any other service that is online. Therefore, I have been able to participate in the Lord’s Supper, watch the Christmas celebrations, hear the Children’s choir, when they have a special service, and any other service that is online. I have enjoyed the services in the City park, even if I couldn’t be there in person. I am so looking forward to Sunday morning. I know the presence of the Lord will be at Stockdale First Baptist and it will be exciting. God bless you Pastor Kevin and to all the members and visitors, I know it will be a great Sunday morning.
Pastor Kevin thank you for these wonderful words and summary of our rich history. I continue to pray for your family and you as you continue to lead the flock.
