Three Things Every Believer Must Do Today
It is the day after Election Day. The results are in.
Believer, I don’t know how you voted in this election, and I am not trying to solicit that information. I have friends who voted red, and I have friends who voted blue. Your vote was, and is, between you and the Lord. Regardless, these are three things that we must do as believers, today and every day.
We must Remember.
“He changes the times and seasons; he removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” Daniel 2:21
“Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.” Romans 13:1
Remember, God is the one who determines who is in leadership. From local to state and even national leadership, whether we like the leaders who have been placed in those positions or not, God is sovereign over their authority. This doesn’t mean He approves of everything they do, but it reminds us that He is the One who is ultimately in charge. He has been since the foundations of the earth, and He will be for all eternity!
Don’t be deceived into believing that this party is in power or that party is in power. No. The Lord is King, and all powers and authorities are ultimately subject to Him.
We must Pray.
“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” 1 Timothy 2:1–2
It may be easy to pray for leaders we like, but the call for us is to pray for all leaders, both the ones we voted for and the ones we voted against.
We pray that the Lord would direct them. Yes, even if they are unbelieving leaders. “A king’s heart is like channeled water in the LORD’s hand: He directs it wherever he chooses.” Proverbs 21:1
We also pray that, by the Lord’s hand, they would govern with wisdom and righteousness, allowing us to lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.
And if they are unbelievers, we pray for their salvation. “This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:3–4
Don’t let an election derail you from your mission as a believer to pray for those in authority. Instead, let it embolden you in that mission.
We must Know.
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
Regardless of who you voted for, whether you woke up today excited for a change or disappointed and deflated that your party lost, know that not a single political party has usurped the throne of God.
If you are a believer, then you are part of a greater Kingdom, God’s Kingdom. And He still sits enthroned on high as God today, just as He did yesterday, and just as He will tomorrow.
Be still and know that. Know His peace. Know His joy. Know His sovereignty. Know that He is God.

Amen
Thank you!
Well stated.
