3 Things Writing a Blog can Provide
I’ve decided to start a blog. Truly, I’ve decided to start a blog… again. Once upon a time more than 10 years ago I was consistently writing a new blog post. After nearly a year of posting on a daily basis, a move to a new home in a new city, beginning a new degree, and taking a new job, I decided it was time to cease being a blogger.
As I launch this new blog, I bring with me new experiences as a husband, a father, a pastor, and well… as a human.
I believe there are 3 things that writing a blog can provide.
As I make this statement, quite honestly, these 3 things are personal for me. You might find a plethora of other things that writing a blog could provide for you. You may also find that writing a blog is not for you. To each his own.
3 THINGS WRITING A BLOG CAN PROVIDE
- It can provide a challenge
I enjoy challenges. I don’t always enjoy the challenge in the moment. However, challenges can provide growth. I don’t want to become stagnant. I want to continually become a better version of myself. Challenges stretch me and force me out of mere comfort while pushing me to new heights.
In the past, I have challenged myself to make a weekly video devotional. Not only did I become better in front of the camera, a tool that has become more valuable for my profession in 2020, but I also learned how to effectively use editing software.
In mid-2019 I challenged myself to post a scripture and write a short devotional on a daily basis. Not only have I been posting God’s Word consistently for others to read, but naturally I am growing in God’s Word myself. What a blessing this challenge has been.
Late last year I challenged myself to start a podcast for our student ministry. Free Period releases every Tuesday wherever you consume podcasts. Apple, Spotify, Facebook, and YouTube are all platforms you can enjoy this podcast that I co-host along with our young adult minister & assistant student minister, Nathan McEndree. We have some interesting conversations as we seek to answer both serious and silly questions from our students.
I don’t yet know the ways I will grow by challenging myself with this blog. But, I expect growth will occur. It must.
2. It can provide an outlet
Social media is great. However, long Facebook or Instagram posts rarely are read in full. Many times they are just skimmed or skipped over. So, I try to keep my social media posts fairly short.
This blog will give me the opportunity to say more when necessary. And as a preacher, I guarantee you that I have more to say! I’ll try not to bore you.
I haven’t decided quite what I will post when I do. However, a potential could be some highlights… or what I consider to be highlights, from recent sermons.
3. It can provide an opportunity for accomplishment
I don’t think I’m unique in enjoying the feeling I receive from a sense of accomplishment. Accomplishment can be very motivating. And because I recognize that desire within me to accomplish, I try to look for opportunities to accomplish new things.
I believe this desire to accomplish is one of the ways that God has created mankind in His likeness. After God accomplished creation, He rested. (Genesis 2:2) After Jesus accomplished the work on the cross, He sat down at the right hand of the Father. (Hebrews 10:12) God is a God who accomplishes what He sets out to do. I want to be like Him.
What about you?
I’d be interested to know what you are doing to challenge yourself. What is your most valuable outlet? Do you find that you are motivated by accomplishment?
