3 Reasons to Share Your Salvation Story
First Baptist Watauga, where I serve as the Associate Pastor, is currently recording the salvation stories of our members. Our Lead Pastor has strongly encouraged every member to record their story so that they can upload it to social media. We are still at the very beginning of these video releases, but we are already thrilled with how God is using them and look forward, with great expectations, to what God is going to accomplish in this year as we each faithfully share our story.
If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you may ask yourself, “Why should I share my story?”
Well, first, let me start with valid reasons not to share your story. I will list the reasons below.
Reasons not to share your story:
1.
2.
3.
Honestly, there are none. Especially as we are reminded of the call on every believer to go into all the world to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Spirit. That command came directly from Jesus in Matthew 28. But, if that reason hasn’t convinced you, let me give you three practical reasons for you to share your salvation story.
First, it’s easy for you to remember.
There are many different methods for sharing the Gospel with someone else. The Romans Road is one that I use most frequently. But, as we think about sharing the good news of Jesus, anxiety and fear can often overwhelm us. And while there may be many things contributing to our fears, one question is usually common: What if I don’t know what to say? It’s a valid question. So, don’t feel bad if that’s you.
Sharing your own personal salvation story can help you overcome that fear. Why? Because, you already know your story and it’s easy for you to remember. You don’t have to ask me how you came to faith in Christ. If you do, then chances are, you haven’t. If that’s the case, let’s talk.
But, just like any other personal experience, we have a gospel presentation tucked away in our hearts and in our minds. I know my story. And even if you haven’t thought about it in a while, you know your story, too.
Take a moment right now to think about your story by answering these 3 questions:
1. What was my life like before Christ?
2. How did I come to know Christ?
3. What has my life been like since coming to know Christ?
And as you remember your story, ask a new question: Who can I tell my story to?
Second, it’s HIS story in YOUR story.
Every salvation story is different. Jesus called Levi to follow him while he was passing his tax collector’s booth and Paul was saved on the road to Damascus. As we read both of these encounters with Jesus, their stories impact us in different ways, yet they both point us back to Jesus.
Your salvation story is just that, YOUR story pointing back to Jesus. It is a gift God has placed inside of you and it is for YOU to share with others that they might come to know Jesus as well. And by hearing your story, they might gain a story of their own. That’s our prayer.
Third, someone needs to hear it.
If you knew today that someone needed to hear your story of salvation, would you share it? Good news. There is!
How do I know that someone needs to hear it? I know because the world is still full of people that are dying. I know because the world is still full of people that haven’t received salvation through Jesus Christ. I know because the world is lost. But, your story of salvation can make a difference!
One thing I’ve learned in my short 39 years of life is that people are people no matter where you go. When I worked in the business world, I worked with one set of co-workers. Each had their own quirks, habits, and personalities. When I left that company for a new position elsewhere, I quickly learned that I was working with the exact same people. They just had different names and different faces. People are people no matter where you go.
There is someone out there like you. There is someone that has battled the same things you’ve battled, questioned the same things you’ve questioned, and need the same thing you’ve found in Jesus. Now, God can certainly use my story in their life. After all, my story is also rooted in the transforming power of Jesus Christ. However, your story might just make an impact in their life in a different way than mine can.
So, if you aren’t already sharing your story with others, let me encourage you to begin. And if you are a member of First Baptist Watauga, join us in our mission of evangelism by signing up to record your video testimony at fbcwatauga.org/faithvideo.
